Jessica “Jessi” Wilson died of colon cancer June 29 at age 49. Even in her final days, she was working to raise awareness of this deadly disease.
Colorectal cancers are common, affecting 1 in 25 people in the United States. Screenings can often detect cancer before symptoms develop, but many are not aware of or cannot easily access preventative care. Jessi worked with various charities, health care organizations, and advocacy groups in the interest of research, awareness, and access.
Jessi also advocated lifestyle changes, including healthful eating and exercise, that can reduce (though not eliminate) the risk of colon cancer.
Jessi was born in Anytown, CA in 1973. She held a degree in Accounting from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and worked in that field until she became too ill. She leaves behind her parents, Karen and Dale, as well as her beloved 13-year-old daughter, Madeline.
No memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Madeline’s college fund or a colorectal cancer foundation.
