Susan "Sue" Jones (n�e Smith) died in her home on January 19, 2014 in Astoria, OR due to complications following lung cancer. She was 82.
Ms. Jones was born on April 16, 1932 in Roy, OR to her parents, Sam and Jane Smith. She graduated from the University of Portland with a degree in Elementary Education in 1954. She married William Jones in 1955. The Joneses moved to Astoria where William worked as a fisherman and Susan taught the third grade at Astoria Elementary. She retired in 2001 and dedicated her remaining time to educating and caring for her grandchildren, as well as leading prayer circles at her local church.
Ms. Jones was a patient and supportive teacher with a passion for literacy and the arts. She sang for the Astoria Women's Chorus and taught vocal and piano lessons to young students. Inspiring creativity and dedication in others was her life-long goal.
Ms. Jones is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and James White of Portland, OR; her son, Ray Jones; her brother, Charles Smith; and six grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, William; her sister, Betty Smith; and her daughter, Kate Jones.
Ms. Jones will be buried in a private ceremony on January 25, 2014. A memorial will take place on January 26 at 3:00 p.m. at Wicker Hall. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Ms. Jones' life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Astoria Women's Chorus.
